Dealing with Stress in the Current Times

Kavita Agarwal

"Rule number one is, don't sweat the small stuff. Rule number two is, it's all small stuff." - Robert Eliot

This a stressful time for all of us, in our own way. The entire world is engulfed in anxiety. Businessmen are under stress due to the lockdown and its impact on the economy. The entire workforce is under stress, worried about their next paycheque. Parents are stressed from managing work-from-home, household chores and kids. Children are stressed, as they cannot go out of the house due to health risks. One word – stress – means different things to different people, yet is affecting the entire human race, the young and the old alike.

What is stress? Stress is simply our inability to manage our system, our inability to deal with the situation we currently are in. When we are not able to manage our current circumstances, we feel stressed. For example, will people who are feeling stressed about going to work, feel stress-free once they reach their job? No. They will be even more stressed once they are out of their homes. They risk contracting the virus, which could in turn, risk the health of their beloved family as well. So, stress is not created by the situation.

Some people are living a very content and happy life even in this crisis. Others are stressed and anxious. The circumstances are the same for both of them. Why is there so much difference in their way of dealing with the same situation?

Imagine that you are driving a car. But the steering wheel is not functioning properly. When you steer left, it moves in the other direction. The mechanism of the steering wheel is faulty. You know how to drive a normal car, but when its systems are not functioning correctly, you will not be able to drive it properly. It will create an unmanageable situation for you, thus creating stress. But for a person who learns to drive the faulty car, will be able to drive it without any stress, as he has understood the fault in the system.

Often, we are not aware of how our own system works. How our mind, our body, or our emotions work. And we are just steering this body with a faulty understanding of the system. It definitely is going to create unmanageable situations for us, thus creating stress.

Imagine you borrow your friend’s diesel car and run out of fuel. You somehow manage to reach a gas-station, but they only have petrol, no diesel. The nearest gas station is 25 Km away. Would you fill the car with petrol instead of diesel? The car would explode if you did that; you cannot use petrol to fuel a diesel car. But when it comes to re-fuelling our own bodies with food, what do we feed it? Are we not creating disease ourself? Stressful bodies are not at their best, and open to health risks.

Stress is not created by the activity that we are performing in life, nor is it caused by situations, it is simply caused by our inability to manage our system. It is the inability to manage the situation internally, not the just external factors. We must be more aware of how our body, mind and life work. Once we understand the system, Life will be beautiful again, as we will sail through all situations that life takes us through.
